Non-military food... your personal munchies.... chips, cookies, soda, etc.....
Cigarettes if you're a smoker, dip, etc....

From my understanding, a Pogue is someone in the rear like a supply clerk or admin clerk.  Someone who gives the front line soldiers a hard time and whose unofficial job is to be as unhelpful to a front line soldier as possible.  So you need snacks like chips, cookies, candy, whatever to bribe the Pogue to do what you need.  Hence it's called Pogey bait.

Simply put, junk food.  Most units ban food and drinks of any kind.

I always thought it was "bait" to get them out of their desk jobs and actually INTO the field to experience the real military.

I was told that it was to bribe, but your version works too.  This was the way it was explained to me.

Pogeys are small rodents about the size of a golf ball.  They are especially prevailant in desert areas.  They are not poisonous or anything but they will bite you if they are hungry.  Pogey bait comes in military wrap, sorta like an MRE but smaller, and is used to attract the pogeys away from where you sleep so you don't get bit at night.  Hope this helps!

I was taught since boot camp that the word POG stands for Personnel Other than Grunt.  And pogey bait is pretty much anything other than those damn MRE's.

LOL, now tell the truth, 2WP.

Pogey bait is really those extra things you'll need, like spare grid squares and chemlight batteries.

A little language history:

The word for a certain part of female anatomy in Korean is Pogee(sp) (soft G).  That became butchered into Pogey (hard G), and Pogey bait the obvious thing you pay for Pogee in a war-torn Korea.  It was further used as a term for REMFs, Pouge (long O, hard G) because..well alot of folks at the front call REMFs by the English word for Pogee.

Since then, the meaning has only slightly changed, though they've become two separate words in today's GI vernacular.

Pogey bait=Non-GI food
Pouge=REMF, or non-hardcore person

So much for the language history lesson for today.

Origin of the Term "Pogey Bait"
There's an old story going around the Corps - has been for years - about the origin of the term "Pogey Bait".

The Marines in China before WW II were issued candy (Baby Ruths, Tootsie Rolls, etc.) as part of their their ration supplements.  At the time, sugar and other assorted sweets were rare commodities in China and much in demand by the Chinese, so the troops found the candy useful for barter in town.

The Chinese word for prostitute, roughly translated, is "pogey".  Thus, Marines being Marines, candy became "Pogey Bait".

Yea junk food is right although used by Grunts mostly. The  Geedunk is where you would get your Pogey bait.

Long-Rifle-Tactical and the following post are correct, it is an older Navy and Marine term dating from Pre-WWII China service.

That's what my dim memory says too.  Bait best used while on R&R.

As a proud veteran of a tour in "the land of heated floors, sliding doors, and slant eyed whores", pogee is indeed the word for that magical, wonderful part of the female anatomy from which they derive all of their power.
However, it is the vulgar term, much like c*nt is.
Having not talked to any Korean physicians, I have no idea what the Korean vagina equivalent is.

Well I've read posts here about it's origins in the Army, Korea, and China. Let me add a fourth one. The word "Pogi" means handsome in the Philippines. Anything you could bring on a night on the town that made you stand out to the girls was called "Pogi Bait".  Apples, oranges, candy and even Chem lights all did the trick.

How the heck did you get through Army Basic training and not hear this term?  Let alone AIT?

Were you one of those guys always doing the pushups for falling asleep during the classes?

Being in the Army I can explain:

pogey:
a fatass, or someone who needs to be assigned to FTU (fatass training unit)

pogey-bait:
snackfood to catch pogeys with, like leaving a can of pringles in the middle of the barracks with a note that says "BOOM!" under it (happened to me).

Also known as FAT PILLS

Ding Ding! Yes we do have a winner, he wanted to know what Pogey bait is, i.e. what does it mean when it says to bring Pogey bait on his AT packing list.  Telling him that it's an old term that dates from pre-WWII China service, tells him jack shit.  So what does he bring to AT?  He didn't want to know what the origins of the word was.  If you asked me what parsiminous means and I told you it is derived from the latin word "to be stingy" it still doesn't really tell you what it means.

Here's a new one (for me anyway). A Pvt of the female persuasion was sent out seeking 'PMS boards'. She said Sgt told her to get the monthly AND quarterly ones (I guess he really wanted everyone to be informed)...

Serving as an active duty Army Korean linguist for over seven years, I am going with long-rifle-tactical, Ross, and TimJ on this one.  Vulgar Korean term for female genitalia.

The term was popularized during the Korean war, but the actual Korean word is derived from the Chinese root (actually they sound the same unless you have some linguistic training).
