- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2013Capacity: 500 GBVerified PurchaseShipping: 5/5 I ordered it with FREE super saver shipping, as I was not in a hurry to receive this item, it arrived on time as the expected date of arrival! No delays.
Price: 5/5 I did my research on several different sites looking for a low price on a Hard Drive with this much storage, other items were going for $70+ (at the time of purchase I got this for $49.99 free shipping)
Condition: 5/5 Item arrived in new condition, no scratches or shipping damages.
Operation: 5/5 Easy to use, plug into the computer and it's good to go. Compatable with all windows OS, would require formating for use with MAC.
Word to the wise: Having worked in computers my whole life, the reviews where people post that after plugging it into the computer it "Never worked, came up, turned on, ect." are 9 out of 10 times the Users fault. Very rarely does a product go out that hasn't been tested and verified working. Hardware failure comes with use over long periods of time.
For those who plugged it in and it never came up, are more than likely looking at a driver issue. But if you keep your computer up to date and run windows updates you should never encounter this problem!
Background info:
I bought this external drive because I wanted to use it as a Multi-Boot USB. In simple terms I was planning on putting Windows 8 all the way down to XP on this hard drive so I could carry the Hard drive around instead of all the CD's. (I work in a computer lab, constantly having to install from discs.)
Little did I do my homework to come and find out the format of storage device I would need is FAT32, and this drive comes in NTFS (which is a good thing, but not if your planning on using it like I do). FAT32 is the file system for storage devices 32gb and under, but is also what I need for my project.
But no need to worry a simple program I found online would format a drive over 32gb to be FAT32! And I didn't lose any space in the conversion!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2013Capacity: 500 GBVerified PurchaseI bought two of these to backup my Mac, and they were a bit iffy at first. If I connected one, sometimes it would not mount up and would just start to make a clicking noise. So I would quickly unconnect it, and usually after several seconds waiting if I tried it again, it would mount okay. After the clicking I would try to repair these volumes using Disk Utility--IIRC that would sometimes take a while, like a half hour, maybe more. It seemed to me that if the Mac was in use while repairing one of these, sometimes the non-related use of the computer would cause the drive to start doing the click. So for a while I wasn't using my computer at all while trying to repair them after a clicking episode.
I eventually developed a routine I followed when attempting to mount (connect) these drives, which I still follow. I found that repairing my Mac's main HDD in Disk Utility, then closing Disk Utility before trying to connect one of these, seemed to help. Then, once the Toshiba drive was mounted okay, I would again start Disk Utility and repair it even if it seemed to be working fine. Then, I would backup my Mac to it.
I guess that protocol when connecting these drives must have helped, since these drives run great now. It's been months since I got the click or one of them wouldn't mount up okay. I can repair them in Disk Utility and use my computer at the same time while doing so, without any problems. I'm not sure what made these at first somewhat sickly little drives turn into such great troopers, but they really did.
One thing that I think helps when restoring a recently screwed up Mac from one of these using Carbon Copy Cloner, is that I only have USB 2.0 on my Mac Mini, so the speed is throttled down a bit from the USB 3.0 spec, which helps them to not overheat during extended use. Plus, if I am going to be running an external drive hard for an hour or more, I point a fan at it to help it stay cool.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2012When you see the connector on this you might think what is that if you're new to USB 3.0? This drive has a "USB 3.0 Micro B" connector on it, so if you're like me and forget cables all the time, you may want to pick up some extras to keep at work/home/laptop bag. Anyway; Toshiba includes a very short cable that plugs into the drive and has your traditional-looking USB male connector on the other end for connecting to your computer. If your computer does USB 3 then you're good, otherwise you're running USB 2 speeds, but the same cable will work for both on the computer side so you're okay there. If you do forget you USB 3 cable, you can hook a standard USB 2.0 micro-usb male connector to the drive; like what you'd charge your cell phone with, and at least have USB 2.0 speeds. If you're copying a lot of data though, go with USB 3.0 cables and compatible computers wherever possible because the drive seems like it can do better than USB 2.0 speeds, sustained.
I bought the drive for sending a huge batch of data to someone; I copied about 250 gigs of data files off a server that only had a USB 2.0 port. The drive sustained 34 MB/sec writing the entire time the copy was running. This makes me think that if you're going to use it regularly, get a USB 3.0 interface adapter for your computer as it appears the drive will definitely take advantage of it. USB 2.0 tops out at 35 MB/sec but I'm thinking that was the what kept me pegged to 34 MB/sec for two hours and USB 3.0 would have been faster if I had the right port available.
