A 24-year-old Kent man who checked himself into Bellevue’s Overlake Medical Center is facing assault charges after he allegedly attacked another patient and a nurse with a broken piece of Plexiglas, according to King County prosecutors.

Kanvir Singh Grewal is charged with first-degree assault for the alleged attack on a 65-year-old male patient, and second-degree assault for allegedly breaking a nurse’s nose when she came to the patient’s aid. Grewal, who does not have a prior criminal history, remains jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail, jail and court records show.

According to charging papers, Grewal voluntarily checked himself into the hospital and was admitted into the Behavioral Health Unit on June 15. He awoke around 3 a.m. on June 16, complained to a nurse he couldn’t sleep and was given a sedative, the papers say.

A couple hours later, he came out of his room and began pacing the hallways.

Just before 6 a.m., Grewal pulled a fire alarm in the west hallway, then cut through a day room to the east hallway, where he broke a Plexiglas case for a fire extinguisher, charging papers say. He broke off a sharpened piece of Plexiglas, went into a patient’s room and began stabbing a sleeping patient in the back of the head, say the charges.

The man woke up screaming as Grewal continued his attack, the charges say. When a nurse ran in and tried to stop Grewal, he held up the Plexiglas and “came down in a stabbing motion towards her face,” fracturing her nose, the papers say. She stumbled out of the room to get help.

A 27-year-old patient also heard the man’s screams and ran into the room, where he found the victim face down on the floor as Grewal attempted to strangle him with a towel, charging papers say. The 27-year-old grabbed Grewal’s wrist and held him until a security guard ran in and tackled Grewal, according to the charges.

The injured patient had a concussion and suffered several deep cuts to his head and hands, a broken finger and cuts, scrapes and bruises to his arms and upper body, charging papers say. He was taken to the emergency room and received staples to his head to stop the bleeding, they say.

Grewal and the 65-year-old victim “did not know each other and had no prior encounters, interactions or issues between them,” although they may have briefly seen each other in the unit, charging papers say.
