Thieves Target Mentally Challenged Man: Cops

Investigators hope surveillance pictures will lead them to suspects

Police in Atlantic County are hunting for two people accused of trying to steal thousands of dollars from a mentally challenged man.

“They are predators” says Pleasantville police Captain Rocky Melendez. “It’s unconscionable. It goes beyond words.”

Detectives say the pair told the 64-year old victim he owed them eight thousand dollars for washing the siding of his home. He let them into his house where, police say, they took an unknown amount of cash. But it didn’t stop there.

Investigators tell NBC10 the two thieves took the victim to several Sun National Bank branches in Atlantic County, trying to get more money using cashier’s checks. They also tried their luck at a Northfield check cashing agency. But employees there and at the banks refused to cash the checks.

“There was something definitely suspicious about the transaction that was brought to our attention and they acted appropriately” said Javier Hurtado of Sun National Bank.

Police say these types of scams are a sign of summer. They warn everyone to be wary of strangers showing up at your house, offering their services.
