“One of the most discouraging and disgusting examples of hate in our City is the recent rash of anti-Semitic vandalism in Brooklyn and Manhattan,” said Levin. “The fact that a young person can walk into a store in Greenpoint and spend $5.99 on a pair of swastika earrings only serves to promote and extend the recent resurgence of anti-Semitism in New York. I won’t stand for this in my neighborhood or in my district and I am calling on Bejeweled and all other City retailers who sell these earrings to remove them from your shelves and help us remove the hate from our City.”

remove them by boycott education and other means but not by laws.

It is better that we know if people are buying such item and how many then being ignorant of it as it goes underground

A regular swastika is a sacred symbol in the Hindu religion and in other cultures as well, including Native Americans – only the diagnal swastika is a nazi symbol

Number one is correct. A few years ago the clothing company “Zaras” sold a purse that was patterned in swastikas. Although Zaras merchandise is made in Spain, the patterned material came from India and was made into the purse innocently. However, they removed the purses from stores out of decency as should this retailer.

This is a Hindu ornament, probably made in India.

I would think it should be a crime to sell Nazi symbols and memorabilia.

It’s true that this was a Hindu symbol before the Nazis came out with a similar one. But this is an extremely delicate matter and most people cannot differentiate between the two and most importantly they are mostly associated as a Nazi symbol rather than a Hindu one. For this reason alone stores should remove it even if their intention was that it’s Hindu and not Nazi.

How about passing rules preventing sidewalk vendors and tourist traps from selling very authentic looking police paraphernalia, including badges, cards, clothing, etc…

Some look so authentic they would fool a cop’s mother during the day. So what do I do if there is banging at night, and I look through my window and see a person flashing some of those things? Risk getting shot by not letting him in, or have a home invasion?

A lot of Native American art has this design. It’s also an old European pagan synbol. If an anti-semite wants to wear it, that’s fine. I’d rather know who they are.
