This product is clearly a port from another platform. When I can get it to work -- and I have been a Mac, Windows, and Linux application developer -- then it does a fantastic job of recognizing the text and creating PDF documents.

But the product does not work with OS X Mountain Lion.

The software installs with hard-coded file permissions (user ID 501) into the /Applications folder. If this user ID does not exist, then the product will not work: it crashes immediately upon launch with no diagnostic information or feedback. Reporting this as a bug (which should be very easy to fix) is not possible. I have not been able to get a response from the company addressing this specific issue.

In 2010, the company released an update, version 12.0.5 Updater. This improved things somewhat. Now instead of silently refusing to launch, the program displays a dialog which says "Administrator rights are required to run this software for the first time." The only option is to click a "Quit" button to dismiss the dialog. Doing so does nothing to resolve the issue. This is not a standard OS X dialog; a Mac user would not perform a common procedure in response to such a message.

The company added an item to this product's FAQ web page at [...] - as I write this, it is the last such FAQ item on the page. The instructions tell the user to modify the file permissions on the "/Library/Application Support" folder. In practice, this hack might work around the problem this software creates, but WTF? Instructions to modify permissions on this folder -- that could be a very dangerous operation. I wouldn't be able to talk my Mom through this one over the phone. These instructions suggest that the tech support people know what is causing this issue -- so why doesn't the required 12.0.5 Updater perform these actions? Modifying permissions on a hidden support folder is a standard operation of an Installer.app package, and the 12.0.5 Updater requires administrator rights to install.

I've ported (re-written) software that was developed on Linux to the Mac environment. I was able to re-package software so that it can operate as a standard Mac application, and handle being moved around with no weird permissions. I understand that software from other environments (Windows, Linux) may expect very specific file system layouts. But there is no excuse for this sort of bug in commercial software.

If you can get the product to run, it displays a huge window that covers up your screen but has no other purpose. Dragging files into this window does nothing. You have to click on unusual icons to modify cryptic options. It's best to leave them alone. Opening an image, TIFF, or PDF file via the File menu works fine, and the software does a great job of recognizing the documents and saving to PDF. Saving as a MS Word file often produces unusable results, but this is the case with other OCR software. I only tested documents written in English.

Long, negative rants like this make the reviewer look like an arse. But given the product's prominence in a mostly-empty field of OCR software for the Macintosh, you should know what you're getting into. Excellent, pro-quality OCR capabilities wrapped in a mess that is (at best) hard to figure out, and at worst will not work at all. The company does not seem able or willing to address these issues, which seem to stem from very simple technical details of installation or file layout. No other Mac software products have issues like this.

Other companies, more familiar with Mac software development, may license the same OCR engine that forms the core of this product. Suggestions are welcome. Good luck!

Installed on 2008 iMac running Leopard, latest updates installed and the latest drivers for the HP Photosmart C6280. Never saw the scanner, could not make it work. Tech support for this product is pretty much non existent, had to rely solely on email tech support which is absolutely worthless when you are onsite. Will never purchase this product again. It must be nice to be able to sell a product that doesn't have to work and the user is stuck with it, unbelievable what the software industry gets away with. Could you imagine buying a car and finding out it doesn't start, has no wheels to move, and the salesman says sorry your stuck with it.

I bought a new scanner, only to find out I'd also have to buy a "pro" copy of the OCR software because the disc that came with the scanner only allowed 40 scans.
I took back the new scanner, bought ReadIrisPro, and it worked perfectly with my Macbook Air and my 10-year-old Epson scanner.

I have a Mac OS 10.6.6 and installed ReadIris Pro 12. As others have mentioned the customer service is basically non-existant (phone messages-no pick up, email only). Thankfully I was able to download it and it worked with my Canon MX850 so I have to give it a good review. But you definitely purchase this at your own risk.
