A horse has been diagnosed with equine influenza at the Oregon State University veterinary hospital, and the facility has stopped accepting horses for all but emergency treatment until the risk of infection is over.
The infected horse has been moved to an isolation facility for treatment and other horses at the Corvallis hospital are being monitored for signs of the disease, the university announced Tuesday. It will be at least Monday before the veterinary hospital begins accepting horses again for non-emergency treatment.
Equine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is not typically fatal. It is not transmissible to humans or other animals, but can spread rapidly among horses and other equine species.
