  • A second man also intervened and was reportedly left with severe injuries

A man has been arrested after a blind man and another train passenger were allegedly assaulted by a group of Chelsea supporters.

The altercation happened on May 3, the day Chelsea won the Premier League title, as four fans reportedly sang songs about Cesc Fabregas as the train pulled into Shepherd’s Bush station.

A woman asked them to be quiet but was verbally abused before a blind man intervened and was 'roughed up'. A second passenger then tried to help but was allegedly assaulted.

A witness told The Sun: ‘They called her a slag. A man with a white stick tried to intervene after hearing what was happening. He was roughed up. Then another man got involved.’

It has been reported that the second man who intervened was taken to hospital with severe facial injuries.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: ‘We were called to reports of an altercation on Sunday, 3 May, at Shepherd’s Bush London Underground station.

‘The call came into police shortly before 10.20pm. Officers attended the scene and a 22-year-old man from Harrow was arrested on suspicion of common assault. He has been bailed pending further enquiries until Wednesday 27 May.’

The incident could cause further embarrassment for Chelsea after their fans abused a black commuter in Paris in February.

Footage appeared after Chelsea's Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain showing Souleymane, a 33-year-old born in Paris, twice being shoved back on to the platform at Richelieu-Drouot station before a group of Chelsea fans chant: 'We're racist, we're racist and that's the way we like it.'

Five men appeared in Waltham Forest Magistrates' Court in north-east London on March 25 over the incident.  All five will fight applications to impose football banning orders, the court heard. The men are expected to give evidence at the same court on July 15 and 16 when the full hearing starts.
