Intel Core i7-14700K tested and compared to 13700K, up to 20.7% faster multi-core but needs 30 more watts

Intel Core i7-14700K, the Raptor Lake Refresh CPU with more cores and higher clocks has been put to a test

The Chinese tech reviewer “T小白” got a sneak peek at Intel’s upcoming desktop CPU, which they jokingly referred to as 13700KS, to avoid any unnecessary attention from the Chinese company (which usually requests such videos be taken down). However, this test is not just a simple overclock of the existing 13700K processor, but a true test of an early sample that has somehow made its way to this media outlet.

The reason we know this is simple, the Core i7-14700K is the only SKU in the upcoming Raptor Lake Refresh lineup to feature more cores. Instead of 16, this part will now boast 20 cores, which is clearly shown in this video. So there is no question whether the 14700K has indeed been tested, but what might not be clear is whether we are looking at a qualification or a retail sample; however, there shouldn’t be much of a performance impact regardless.

This Core i7-14700K CPU features 8 Performance and 12 Efficient cores with a maximum thread count of 28. This is an upgrade over 13700K with 8P+8E config, but also an upgrade in terms of clocks. Instead of 5.3 GHz, the newer SKU will boost up to 5.5 GHz.

The CPU has been shown with 5.5 GHz boost for Performance cores and 4.3 GHz on Efficient cores during all-core AIDA64 test. Worth adding that compared to 13700K, the maximum package power has risen from 232 to 260W on the newer 14th Gen CPU.

For the comparison test between Core i7-13700K and Core i7-14700K the reviewer has chosen a high-end rig featuring an ASUS ROG APEX Z790 motherboard, paired with dual 16GB DDR5-8600 memory and RTX 4090 graphics.

The CPU is shown with 4.2% to 4.5% higher single core performance in CPU-Z and Cinebench R23 and 14.3% to 20.7% in multithreaded workloads. Interesting the reviewer has disabled four Efficient cores and clocked the CPU to the same level specs as Core i7-13700K which has shown nearly identical performance.

In terms of gaming, as demoed in games such as CS:GO, Genshin Impact and PUBG, there appears to be a minor upgrade in performance with both parts trading places and often showing better 1% low framerate with the currently available Raptor Lake part.

The Core i7-14700K is scheduled for release in October, with Intel expected to officially unveil the new K-series next month during its Innovation 2023 event. Evidently, certain samples have already been sent out to OEMs and board partners. This particular sample, which ended up lost in transit and subsequently discovered by the reviewer, appears to be one such case. It is hopeful that similar intriguing incidents will occur prior to the official launch.
