SCOTT CITY, Mo. (AP) – A southeast Missouri man is facing charges for allegedly beating an amputee in the face with a hammer and stealing his prescription medications.

The Southeast Missourian reports that 27-year-old Dustin Smith of Scott City is charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, burglary and robbery.

The attack happened Dec. 28. The victim told police Smith was doing laundry at the victim’s home when he became agitated and began to steal property and money.

The victim told authorities that Smith assaulted him with a hammer and another item, then took pain and anti-anxiety drugs.

The victim was treated at a hospital for fractures to his nose and eye socket.

Smith does not have a listed attorney.
