Raiders eliminated from playoffs with loss to Chargers

The Raiders are the fastest team in a decade to get eliminated from the playoffs.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Raiders never looked to be playoff-bound in 2014, but they were officially eliminated from the postseason on Sunday with a 13-6 loss to the San Diego Chargers, making them the quickest team to get knocked out of the playoff race in a decade.

Not since the Miami Dolphins in 2004 has a team managed to be eliminated from postseason contention in Week 11, but the winless Raiders matched that feat by dropping to 0-10 on Sunday. The 2004 Dolphins started their season 1-9, but won three of five immediately after elimination from the possibility of the playoffs.

For the Raiders, winning three of five would be a meteoric turnaround, as the team is battling the possibility of becoming just the second team to ever finish a year winless in a 16-game season. The Detroit Lions finished 0-16 in 2008 and followed the year with a 2-14 record in 2009.

The Chargers are battling the Denver Broncos at the top of the AFC West divisional race, which sped up Oakland getting expedited from the mathematical possibility of the postseason.
