Oregon Health and Science University Department of Emergency Medicine and the University of Washington have launched a monthlong community scavenger hunt.

The Portland Metro HeartMap Challenge encourages people to locate automated external defibrillators in the Portland-Vancouver area so they can be found more quickly in an emergency. A $10,000 grand prize will be awarded to the individual or team that identifies the most unique AEDs.

The challenge runs Nov. 15 through Dec. 15. Registration is now open at https://heartmap.uwctc.org.

The scavenger hunt will take place throughout four Portland-metro area counties: Clark County and Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties in Oregon.

The goal of the challenge is to create a comprehensive database of locations that can be accessed by 911 operators, emergency responders and the public to quickly help cardiac arrest victims.
