Since I am paying out of pocket not using my insurance, I chose this dental clinic after seeing great reviews. It sucks im the one who received a bad experience. Waited more than an hour to get seen. No sincere apology when I've expressed my disappointment w time management.
In the future, if the doctor is running late or still busy w another client, a simple update upon check in or courtesy call will suffice. Patient's time should be as important as doctors time.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cher M.Queens Village, NY03212May 1, 2021Updated review
Four years later and I'm still the happiest patient. Dr. Alvarez is always very pleasant, professional, mad caring!
Dr. Alvarez will always point out the good and gently approaches any situation with ease. I always feel comfortable, prioritize, and welcomed at each of my visits. In addition to my entire family visiting Dr. Alvarez we couldn't have chosen a better doctor to meet all of our dental needs. Absolutely everyone is super professional and nice. THEY LISTEN! To me that is very important. In fact, number 1 on the list.
Thank you to the entire team!

He is super tentative and his chairside manner is an A+. Being 7months pregnant, Dr. A always checked up on me to ensure I was ok. He is amazing and gentle!

This is going to be one of the most glowing reviews that I have ever written here on Yelp. I wish that I could give twenty stars to Dr. Alvarez and Bloomfield Dental Designs. I had the best possible experience during my office visit yesterday and every expectation was exceeded.
I had been experiencing some pain in my tooth and jaw for several days. Initially, I thought that it was attributable to grinding my teeth for a couple of nights and that it eventually would go away. Alas, it persisted and it was getting worse. As Murphy's Law would have it, the pain became unbearable on a Saturday and my current dentist didn't have office hours (plus, her website where you can purportedly book appointments online was down; I couldn't wait to call on Monday). A search online led me to Bloomfield Dental Designs and thankfully they had a slot available yesterday afternoon. Same day appointment AND they took my insurance!
The new patient paperwork was easy and straightforward - no duplicative or useless questions. The receptionist was very polite, personable, and friendly. There was no wait either. Even though it was a same day appointment, I was seen at my scheduled time. I couldn't believe it.
The nurse took some X-rays and asked me about the pain that I was experiencing. I was also asked what I wanted to watch on television. I was given a keyboard and they have Netflix. What???
Dr. Alvarez then came in and introduced himself. He is extraordinarily kind and took the time to carefully explain that I had a "pocket" which was attributable to either having braces or a mouth injury I had in that area as a child. He also explained the treatment I would have that day from the hygienist, the medication required, and potential next steps.
The hygienist carefully treated the area and then told me what do before my next appointment in two weeks. Dr. Alvarez then met with me at the front desk before I left to personally give me my prescription, the handwritten instructions, and shake my hand.
Granted, parking may be difficult at times because it is near Bloomfield College and right off of Bloomfield Avenue. There is a parking lot nearby and if you are a Bloomfield resident, their office is in a convenient location right in the heart of downtown.
Dr. Alvarez and Bloomfield Dental Designs will be my go-to dentist until my upcoming move. Their office is clean and modern and everyone is so nice. I even received a text as soon as I left reminding me of my upcoming appointment so that I could put it in my phone (instead of a card). If you are looking for a new dentist in the area, Dr. Alvarez is great!Helpful 14Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Kassidy S.Short Hills, West Orange, NJ025Nov 17, 2020
This was the BEST Dentist I have ever been to. I assure you I have been to several Dentist in my life because well, my teeth are hell. Dr. Alvarez is the kindest and gentlest Dentist that has ever treated me.
I get very anxious when I have dental work, to the point that I start shaking. Most Dentist will keep pushing through but Dr. Alvarez keep checking on me throughout the procedure and reminded me to breath.
I had an extraction done and it was quick and painless. I've had an ongoing issue with an abscess for years, and not one Dentist has ever told me that I had a cracked tooth, but Dr. Alvarez did.
Also all of the other office staff were fantastic. It's a very pleasant and inviting environment. I'm so thrilled with the results and service that I scheduled another appointment for a cleaning. I'm so glad I found this place!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chantel P.East Orange, NJ36793199May 2, 2019
Don't let the reviews fool you. I suppose they're only great if you don't cavities or if you have only a specific issue. I called and requested an emergency appointment because I had a cracked tooth and was in a lot of pain. They were able to schedule me the same day and the phone staff was very friendly. I arrived and checked in and all was well. I informed the staff that I was pregnant as they began to drape me for my X-ray. Upon hearing that the dentist immediately stopped them from doing it. He said he'd rather wait until I had the baby (At the end of October... It was April 30th at the time) before he do the X-ray. I was a little confused because I've had dental surgery while pregnant before and they double or triple draped me for an X-ray but never refused one all out.
They instead take pictures. The dentist informs me that he's not going to operate without the X-ray. I begin to have a panic attack and once he sees me in tears he changes his mind and said that he's just going to pull the nerve. Not being a dental student I have no idea what the hell that means but it sounded like it would bring relief. So I lay back for the procedure. It's only AFTER he's finished that he informs me that he's STARTED a root canal. He packed medicine and some other white cement like stuff in my tooth but told me I'd likely be in pain again in a few short months but he'll finish once I have the baby...
Now I'm upset. Prior to the surgery I explained that I'd had surgery on nearly 80% of my teeth about 2 years ago but the doctor did a poor job, the fillings were crumbling out and I could only chew on one side of my mouth. The side he did surgery on. Now I'm limited to a soft food diet.
To add insult to injury I was then scheduled for a cleaning 2 days later (today). I go in and explain that I have sensitive teeth and request that they use warm water. I'm told that it's not possible and no dentist would use warm water because it would cause the tools to over heat. I know that to be a lie because my previous dentist used warm water without issue. I tell her that if they proceed with cold water I'm going to be in excruciating pain because of my sensitive teeth. She then examines my mouth and tells me that I don't have sensitive teeth, I have cavities. Like b***** I know wtf if going on with my mouth. Yes I have cavities which causes SENSITIVE TEETH.
So she goes to get the other doctor who performed my half surgery and he too insists that the use of warm water I'm impossible. So I ask him "you were in my mouth 2 days ago, if you saw that I had cavities and knew that there was no way for your office to comfortably perform this cleaning, then why schedule me?" He claims he never looked at my teeth just the one he operated on and that he never scheduled me a cleaning. So I'm asking why the hell am I here then because I most certainly didn't request one but by this time we all had an attitude so I walked out.
I feel like I would have been better off going somewhere else. I felt completely disrespected and like the dentists had no regard for my feelings, my money, or my time. He actually pointed his finger in my face while arguing with me "I didn't schedule you..." Yeah aight. Never again.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Eliana M.Queens, Queens, NY50135Aug 23, 2020

Dr Alvarez is amazing! He's so kind and makes you feel comfortable. I had my wisdom tooth removed ( which I was terrified about ) I was in and out in less than 40 min . It was great! His staff is very helpful and sweet. They are Spanish speaking as well.

After visiting and seeing several Dental Clinics in my lifetime both here in the U.S. and abroad I am lucky to have known Dr. Alvarez who did an amazing transformation of my dental health. I am extremely thankful and grateful to have met Dr. Boris. I will recommend his clinic and his practice to anyone and I will guarantee that the outcome will exceed anyone's expectation.

After several failed attempts in finding a good dentist since I moved to NJ, my search is finally over! From their receptionist and the hygienist to the Dr. Alvarez they are outstanding! My only regret was not finding them 4 years ago! I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for an outstanding dentist including to those who have phobia to dental visits. They make you feel comfortable and are very patient to answer all your questions.
