Former Special Education Teacher's Aide Charged With Indecency With a Child

Rojas free after posting bond early Thursday morning

A former special education teacher's aide in the Princeton Independent School District has been arrested, charged with indecency with a child.

Joshua Dwane Rojas, 34, worked as a paraprofessional, or teachers aide, with special needs students at Lacy Elementary School, according to Princeton ISD Superintendent Philip Anthony.

Rojas was suspended April 24 after it was alleged he assaulted a juvenile at the school, officials said.

District officials told NBC 5 Rojas resigned his position with the school district in June.

An arrest warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child was issued after Rojas was indicted by the Collin County grand jury following testimony from investigators with the Collin County Rural Child Abuse Task Force. Rojas also had outstanding warrants for failure to appear and failure to maintain financial responsibility.

"As always, the health and safety of our students are our top priorities. When allegations such as this arise, the district immediately suspends the individual," said Anthony in a prepared statement. "Parents are notified when an arrest takes place, which is typically a much shorter time frame than in this case, which involved a five-month investigation before the grand jury issued a warrant."

Rojas surrendered to deputies with the Collin County Sheriff's Department Wednesday night, officials said, and was freed early Thursday morning after posting bonds totaling $150,735.

Rojas' profile page on Linkedin lists his employment experience at Princeton ISD as well as three years as a Shipping Tech at Walgreens and one year as a Juvenile Probation Officer in Dallam County. His page said he graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in General Studies, Education.

Editor's Note: The original version of this story reported the superintendent said the incident took place in 2014 -- that was an error. The school district later updated their statement, which can be read here.
