Whether you're searching for a new lunch spot or visiting a foreign land, the improved Google Maps app is intended to help you explore your surroundings.

An update to the Android and iOS applications adds the new Explore button—located in the bottom right corner of the map—which offers a quick look at nearby hot spots (where available).

"With Explore as your guide, you'll see different places and activities that adapt to each area and moment throughout the day," said Google Maps product manager Taj Campbell.

Click on Explore to discover nearby results, or expand your range from a five-minute walk to a 20-minute drive to find even more options. Suggestions also change based on context like time of day and weather. For best results, sign into Google Maps with location reporting and history turned on.

"So don't worry about wandering over to a breakfast spot for dinner, or arriving at the park just in time for a thunderstorm," Campbell said.

As an added perk for Android users, tapping the My Location button or the blue dot on the map will access more details about your locale, including restaurant reviews and transit schedules.

If you've arrived after hours or fell head over heels for the sweet potato fries, save a location in the app and return again later.

Make sure you confirm all of your stops within Google Maps; the app experience will improve over time as it learns your preferences.

The function also works while browsing other neighborhoods and cities, "so you can plan your day's outing or daydream about your next vacation," Campbell said.

Google recently rolled out a number of updates to its mobile version of Google Maps, including the ability to check the status of nearby Uber cars and upcoming train and bus schedules.

Last week, the Android app got a boost for cyclists, who can now find bicycle directions with elevation details, as well as elevation comparisons for multiple routes.
