Marion County train crash: Mechanical problems cause delay; 280 passengers still on board

About 280 passengers are still on board an Amtrak train that crashed into a semi around 2:20 p.m. Monday in Marion County.

The crash occurred on Duckflat Road Southeast near Pearson Road Southeast. The truck driver, 64-year-old Lynn Simonds, said he did not see the train coming when he began crossing the intersection. When the driver saw the train he attempt to clear the tracks, but it was too late.

Initially, crews thought the train could keep traveling to Portland, but upon moving it was clear that the train had mechanical issues, said Christina Leeds, public information officer for Amtrak.

Crews are still working to repair the train, and there are no plans to shuttle passengers from the train to a different location, Leeds said.

There is no time estimate of when repairs will be completed.

Rosemarie Richard, 37, took the train to make the trip from Klamath Falls to Portland. She said passengers are getting impatient.

"It's frustrating because we don't know what's going on," she said. "There are some people here that need to go to work at 6 a.m. tomorrow."

Grant Morseth, a passenger, said the train began moving again shortly before 11 p.m.
