Will Conroy be “Cnut of the Week” yet again?

In just 4 hours, we’ll discover whether Senator Stephen Conroy is chosen as “Cnut of the Week” for the third time running — because it’s just 4 hours until tonight’s edition of Stilgherrian Live (9.30pm Thursdays Sydney time).

Senator Conroy is pre-nominated because… well… he’s continuing his denial-mode tactics in relation to Internet censorship. I know mah peeps, and I know ya want to nominate him. Who else? It’s the same rules as usual. We’re after people (or abstract forces of nature, or organisations or whatever) who’ve been futilely trying to hold back the tide of change.

Who do you nominate, and why?

  2. Maybe it’s time the big man himself, Kevin Rudd, also shouldered the blame for filtering. Especially after his entrance into the twitterverse turned sour.

  3. I’m nominating @KevinRuddPM, for creating so much debate with so little input and so little result. They might have hit the Twitter ground running if they’d thought it through a bit more.

  4. @Michael Meloni: Wow, it’s a bit early to say that @KevinRuddPM‘s entrance to the Twitterverse “turned sour”, isn’t it? I thought give it 48 hours, and it’s only been a little over half that.

    @Andrew E: Actually you’re right. This is the Prime Minster we’re talking about, and they’re online with a Twitter presence and haven’t even worked out whether they’re speaking in the 1st person or the 3rd. And it’s not like they don’t have people they can turn to — though of course that’d mean going to someone new instead of the usual party hacks.

  6. @Ragnarok1971: I should point out that iiNet has joined the trial to prove its stupidity.

    [iiNet CEO Michael] Malone’s main purpose was to provide the Government with “hard numbers” demonstrating “how stupid it is” — specifically that the filtering system would not work, would be patently simple to bypass, would not filter peer-to-peer traffic and would significantly degrade network speeds.

    “They’re not listening to the experts, they’re not listening to the industry, they’re not listening to consumers, so perhaps some hard numbers will actually help,” he said.

    “Every time a kid manages to get through this filter, we’ll be publicising it and every time it blocks legitimate content, we’ll be publicising it.”

    Still, it gives me an excuse to mention that.

  7. I will nominate Ted “Series of Tubes” Stevens, the current senator from Alaska, recently convicted of perjury, and who is slowly, slowly, slowly losing his senate seat as the votes cast in Alaska last week get counted.

  8. And I also want to nominate Twitter, for blowing up on @KevinRuddPM and thereby losing his 670 followers. Every time you think its stable, Twitter assplodes again. It’s getting dull.

  9. I nominate Nathan Rees for obvious reasons. Great budget mate.

    Special mention for lifetime Cnut award goes to Bill Caralis. If you are familiar with any of his 35+ radio stations (2SM anyone) you will understand how much this tightarse regular at Industrial Relations court has totally f&$@?! Radio.

  11. It’s not all Conroy’s fault. It’s not all Kevin’s fault. I blame the federal ALP and everyone in the party for having such a stupid policy.

  13. I nominate fielding for his refusal to understand how the senate works and his inability to let the phone call to bush go so we can all get on with some real issues
