Former police officer must register as a sex offender

Former Colville police officer Rex Newport was sentenced to 29 months in prison today and must register as a sex offender when he is released, according to the Washington Attorney General’s Office. Several women accused Newport of following them home from bars and forcing them to have sex with him. Newport entered an Alford plea on charges of residential burglary, unlawful imprisonment with sexual motivation, custodial sexual misconduct, making a false statement to a law enforcement officers and official misconduct. An Alford plea is used when a defendant wants to maintain their innocence but acknowledges that there is enough evidence against them that they may be convicted. Newport was also ordered to serve 36 months probation and pay $1,100 in court costs.
