The Times’ All-Southland baseball team

Henry Owens, Huntington Beach Edison, Sr., Pitcher: The 6-foot-7 left-hander was the most dominant pitcher in Southern California, going 12-1 with a 1.15 ERA. He was chosen as the 38th pick overall by the Boston Red Sox in the amateur draft.

Lucas Giolito, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, Jr., Pitcher. A no-hitter in a second-round playoff game against Arroyo Grande signaled that Giolito, a UCLA commit, is ready to become the 2012 version of Henry Owens. He finished with a 9-1 record, gave up only 42 hits in 70 1/3 innings and had a 1.00 ERA.

Justin Garza, La Verne Bonita, Jr., Pitcher. A strike machine, Garza walked only 14 in 83 innings while going 13-0. He had an ERA of 0.51 and didn’t yield a run in two Division 3 playoff starts.

Austin Hedges, San Juan Capistrano JSerra, Sr., Catcher. Nine times, the UCLA-bound Hedges picked off runners this season. Four of six baserunners who tried to steal were thrown out by him. Besides his exceptional defensive skills, he hit .360 with four home runs.

Rio Ruiz, La Puente Bishop Amat, Jr., Infielder. Next year’s top professional prospect helped the Lancers win the Division 4 championship, batting .455 with 14 doubles. He hit a two-run home run in the title game at Dodger Stadium.

Trent Gilbert, Torrance, Sr., Infielder. The Arizona signee had 51 hits and a .447 batting average for the Division 4 semifinalists. He had 109 hits over his last two seasons.

William Vazquez, San Fernando, Jr., Infielder. Vazquez was the City Section player of the year after batting .513 with 29 RBIs for the City Division I champions.

Gabrial Franca, Riverside North, Jr., Infielder. Franca was a spark during North’s successful run to win a Southern Section Division 1 championship, playing terrific defense at shortstop. He made three errors all season and batted .385 with 14 doubles.

Ty Moore, Santa Ana Mater Dei, Jr., Outfield. He set a school record with 51 hits while batting .510 with 37 RBIs. The UCLA commit also was 10-3 on the mound in leading the Monarchs to the Trinity League championship.

Austin Saenz, Mission Viejo, Sr., Outfield. The Cal State Fullerton signee contributed a school-record 54 hits and scored 49 runs for the Division 2 champions while batting .491.

Ryan Garvey, Palm Desert, Sr., Outfield. In a season that saw power numbers drop because of new bats, the USC-bound Garvey had nine home runs, 44 RBIs and batted .372 for the Division 4 runner-up.
