Chalkers Corner - TFL "cannot" provide cycle crossing

Despite having put in a cycle track from Richmond along the S side of Lower Richmond Road TFL claim that that it is impossible to link to the shared foot-way on Clifford avenue.

Hi - where would you propose the two are linked up? I assume you mean along the south side of the junction (past the Vet's and to the traffic lights on lower richmond road?). This is definitely a gap that needs bridging.

Admittedly this is a a tricky one but if we took the line that a connected cycle route is a priority there is space in the junction. TFL have recently made a path in along the south side.

The Open Streetmap view of this makes it look just as crazy on the map as it looks in real life.

The cycle track needs to be continued across Clifford and Lower Richmond Rd. The question is how?

There is definitely space, the east carriageway contains 4 lanes at this point when 3 would be more than enough. This extra space could be reallocated to the south side.

The problem is how to fit the crossings into the signal stages. Since it is a bi-directional track, you have to be very careful with the conflict points. There isn't really enough space to have a bicycle waiting area in the middle of Clifford Ave, so this aspect needs to be crossed in one. This would mean restricting vehicle turns from the east into Clifford which would in turn require a dedicated left turn lane, there are ways to accomplish this but they may not sit well with TFL.

The crossing of Lower Richmond Road is easier as there are already dedicated turn lanes from both directions, so disruption would be minimal.

I would recommend both aspect crossings to be fitted with detector loops and push buttons so that they are only active when there is approaching/waiting bicycle traffic. This would help minimise delays for motor traffic.

I think another important thing to remember is that this is a 30mph road at this point. It is currently over-engineered for it's speed limit, so there is a lot of scope for scaling back the impact of the road in this respect.

When I had a look at this junction there didn't seem to be much LT traffic into Clifford Avenue. A single stage crossing of Clifford Avenue could take place at the same time as a right turn from the southbound A205 into the westbound A316 which is currently forbidden (but happens).

Site meeting today (24/5/13) with RUT and TFL planners. Some form of toucan is definitely being planned. If it could be phased at the same time as traffic is being let out of the Mortlake turning a single stage toucan crossing of Clifford Ave is possible and will be modelled. Otherwise two stage with widened island.
The N-S crossing will also be converted to toucan.
