Lost University, a bonus feature of the Lost: The Complete Fifth Season Blu-ray set, lets fans geek out big-time by drilling into the science behind the popular show. Presented as video lectures accessible via BD-Live, the clips show talking heads expounding on themes featured in the time-traveling soap opera, which begins its final season Feb. 2. The $80 Blu-ray set hits stores Tuesday.
The Lost University "courses" include cast members offering jungle-survival tips (embedded right), including the revelation that ants taste like lemons, courtesy of actress Evangeline Lilly, who plays Kate.
For a deeper dip into the science that informs the adventures of the Oceanic Six and their adversaries, students at the virtual university can study:
- Hieroglyphics: Dr. Kara Cooney, a University of California at Los Angeles professor of Egyptian art, talks about "Ancient Writing on the Wall."
- Time travel: In "Introductory Physics of Time Travel," CalTech physics research associate Sean Carroll delves into the time-space continuum.
- Alternative science: Actor Jeremy Davies (*Lost * physicist Daniel Faraday) goes off-script to discuss his fascination with Lynne McTaggert's fact-based book, The Field: The Quest for the Secret Force of the Universe, about ex-Apollo 14 astronaut Ed Mitchell and his Institute of Noetic Sciences.
Lost: The Complete Fifth Season also comes formatted as a $60 regular DVD set complete with the usual bloopers, deleted scenes, audio commentaries and featurettes. The limited-edition Dharma Initiative Orientation Kit (pictured top) can be purchased at additional cost in either DVD or Blu-ray formats.
