SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica, December 2, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – 50,000 people marched in the capital of Costa Rica in support of “life and the family” on November 28, the Catholic News Agency reports. A statement read at the rally called on politicians to “defend all human life” from conception to natural death.

The statement urged that marriage and the family continue to be protected in law, “and for this reason we oppose, and we call on our representatives in the executive branch, legislative assembly and municipalities to reject any bill, policy or institutional activity” to the contrary.

“We are committed to exercising our sacred right to vote in a responsible way, voting for those who propose and are committed to defending and promoting human life, marriage and family in public office.”

The march was organized by the Citizen Center for Life and Family, which fears the government will bring forward legislation to modify the legal regime of protection to human life and family.

Catholic archbishop of San Jose, Hugo Barrantes, said, “The march is only to say that this country remains in favor of the values of life, marriage and family.”

With a birth rate healthier than its North American neighbors at 2.14 children born per woman, Costa Rica is among those countries routinely targeted by international population control pressure groups working through the auspices of the United Nations.

Currently Costa Rica, whose population is 76.3 percent Catholic, restricts abortion, allowing it only in cases where the woman's life is threatened.
