Whenever I have to deal with Oracle 10g projects at work, Oracle SQL Developer always comes in handy.
However yesterday, the backspace and delete button inside the SQL query editor, all of a sudden, stopped working!
I tried restarting the Oracle SQL Developer, even restarting the computer, but the problem persisted.
I didn’t want to uninstall/re-install the application, so I went on to search the Oracle official forums.
Seems like other people had the exact same problem, and the solution was quite simple!
To resolve the problem you have to go to:
Tools -> Preferences -> Accelerators -> Load Preset -> Default -> OK
decoding,
THANKS!!! You’ve just saved me a ton of extra work.
Perfec, it workst!!! I was going to reinstall the program, but tried to google the problem before. THANKS!

I just had this problem this morning. I was about to reinstall when I did a Google search. Thanks for your great post!
where I am going to find tools, preference, etc.
?!?!?
Tools is on the main menu (File, Edit… etc), on the left of Help.
You deserve a gold medal 🙂
I was beginning to think of TOAD and other nasty things.
Thanks a lot for your suggestion…yesterday I started having this problem and I thought my only solution was to re-install everything…you really deserve that medal 😉
Thank you all 🙂
Not able to find Preferences -> Accelerators -> Load Preset -> Default -> under tools. Pls help
wow, thank you! 🙂 I had the same problem, did a search on google and found this page. Weird problem though (bug?).
Awesome!
I started experiencing this problem this morning. I googled “Oracle SQL Developer backspace not working”. Yours was at the top of the list. I read your advice. The whole problem solved in less that 30 seconds from the time I decided to google!
That never happens so smoothly for me!
Thanks!
Why didn’t I Google sooner??
Thanks man,
/E
Worked like a charm! Thanks a ton man!
Thanks a ton !!
What a lifesaver… I was ready to pull my hair out… Your the first hit on Google…
My version of Toad doesn’t have the accelerator option. This fix will work for everyone that doesn’t have the accelerator default option.
The file “plsqlkeys.bin” is getting corrupted. Do the following:
1. Close TOAD.
2. Delete “plsqlkeys.bin” from your \User Files directory.
(C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\User Files)
3. Reopen TOAD and see whether those keys now work.

Echoing thanks big time for saving me from re-installation and frustration!
Awesome – I’ve seen this in JDeveloper as well, and jumped through many hoops trying to fix it, including an SR with Oracle (that didn’t bear fruit). Ugly bug, but an easy fix – many thanks!

30 seconds to fix it.

You are the top one entry about this subjet on Google!
The long list of people affected sould make clear to Oracle that something is wrong on their product.
WOW — omg, you saved my life, or at the very least the walls of my cubicle. One more bash of my head and they were coming down. THANK YOU!
This was great. It is April Fool’s day, and I had been playing pranks all over the office (tape over mouse lasers, flipping mouse buttons, screenshot backgrounds…all the classics). I step away for a minute and my SQL Developer quits with not only back space, but also home, end, page up and down and arrow keys. I figured I had been pranked good. 15 minutes later I find this post and realize that it was really just God pranking me.
THANKS A TON! Saved me a lot of agony! Bless you for posting it.
Seem many suffered this problem but could solve the problem. Thanks you very very much.

Even the installing SQL Dev is easy task – Re-Install doesn’t solve the issue in this case.
Anyhow your suggestion is much MORE quicker and easier than a re-install.

Anyway a brilliant bug!
Thanks! Solved my biggest headache with SQL developer.
Wow, after all this time since the initial posting this solution is still cyber gold. Carriage return, left arrow, ctrl+v, and ctrl+x all had stopped working for me and this fixed them all like a charm. Having to click backwards, right click to paste, and copy new lines in from other text editors was driving me up the wall, and our company help desk was having zero luck helping me. Should have known that google would be faster than trusting the help desk idiots that transfer your ticket all over for 3 months… Thanks again for finding and posting a solution to this!
I’ll join in here and say THANK YOU. I’ll echo some of the statements here, I was going crazy trying to get new lines, copy/paste by right clicking selecting paste, etc. THANKS AGAIN!
THANK YOU!!!!!!

Quick question : Would you know if it is possible to assigna an accelerator key to move between the tabs in the resultd pane. ie to move between the Results, Script Output, Explain etc tabs of a single Editor pane ?
Thank you!
This was a very helpful post! I googled this problem, which I’d been having since yesterday, and there it was. Thanks, a ton!
Thanks for the post! It was driving me crazy because it just suddenly stopped working, very helpful post.
Wonderful tip…really had me confused as to what corrupted this setting…downloaded PL/SQL Developer to have as a backup to AquaData (already installed but limited functionality).
This is a really great tip, THANKS for the post!

Hi Decoder,
Thanks a lot
Thanks OP !
Tools -> Preferences -> Accelerators -> Load Preset -> Default -> OK
is no longer available in the 2.1 version of SQL Developer.
The way I got around this problem in 2.1 was to just delete the $HOME/.sqldeveloper directory.
Great Fix, I do not know how this happened, I may have hit a combination of keys or something and suddenly most of those functions on the keyboard did not work.
I spent a whole day trying to figure this out without success. I was going to try some Martial Arts against the computer!
I am glad I found this page and fixed the problem in 2 minutes! Thanks for sharing!
OMG, I’ve been debugging it for the past couple of hours! Then I saw your post! grrr, wish I searched earlier..
Thanks again!
Thanks a ton.Its working.I have tried reinstalling but didnt work.
This simple step worked for me.
Thanks
Sanjay
I’ve been dealing with this since yesterday…thank you!
Thanks a ton. You are a lifesaver. I thought that the only option was to reinstall.

Can’t believe i lived with this issue for as long as I did. A simple Google search landed me on your page and my problem is resolved. Thanks!
Thanks a lot!! Your are a lifesaver!!
Thank you, a million times over for this! I’m so glad I made my way to your page from Google. I can’t tell you how frustrating this was. You rock.
Sometimes, just sometimes, the internet just works. Usually I can spend hours browsing forums for a solution to a problem and never quite manage it. This was an exception. Thanks. Top tip.
And the gratitude keeps coming… Thanks once again for posting this (and voluntarily too because you thought it might help others). It really saved me a lot of effort and time.
THANKS!! it worked GREAT!!
just went to tools–> preferences , and then press the “Load Preset Button (at bottom rigth corner) and select “Default” –> OK and DONE!!
😀 Thanks so much!
The “Tools>>Preferences>>Accelerator>>Load preset>>select default>>OK” tip did not fix a non-working backspace key for me with a new install of 1.5.5. Instead, I solved it this way: Go to “Tools>>Preferences>>Accelerator>>” then scroll down to and select the “Delete Previous Char” Action. Add a New Accelerator “Shift-Backspace” for this action (this is only temporary). Click OK and verify that Shift-Backspace now works. Exit SQL Developer. In C:\Documents and Settings\”username”\Application Data\SQL Developer\system1.5.5.59.69\o.ide.11.1.1.0.22.49.48, edit the settings.xml file. Find the text “delete-previous”. Three lines below that, after tag “javax.swing.KeyStroke”, should be the text “shift [8]“. This is the New Accelerator you added earlier. The “[8]” apparently means the Backspace key. Delete “shift “, leaving just “[8]“. Save the file, then restart SQL Developer. If you look at the Accelerator for the “Delete Previous Char” action, it will now show as “Backspace”. Try some editing. The Backspace key now works normally.
Thanks. Like a good programmer, I tried to fix it by myself first, totally frustrated after a while. Decided to re-install but told myself to google before re-installing.
Thanks. You’ve made my Monday morning bearable again.
[…] az agyam. Feltúrtam a guglit a problémáért (első oldal, első bejegyzés ehehehe) és itt a solution. Bemegy az ember a tools/preferences/accelerators alá és a Load Preset-nél defaultot tölt és […]

Btw, for those who could not find the Load Preset – it is a button right when you click Accelerators. It is not under the categories or actions of the accelerator. It is a button above the ok and cancel of the preferences dialog box.
Thanks again for your post!!!
sorry but i can’t find TOAD or Tools -> Preferences -> Accelerators -> Load Preset -> Default -> OK and i really can’t do any thing………. can anybody help plz

Thank you for sharing the solution. It helped a lot 🙂
Oh man, I’ve been trying to get people to use Oracle SQL Developer instead of buying a $1000 IDE for each employee at the office when this backspace thing happened.
If a suit saw me struggle with the backspace key, that exec would’ve forced us to spend the umpteen thousand dollars.
Thanks a lot, it saved a lot of time for me.
Perfect, it works!!!
Awesome.
Thanks a lot 🙂 It worked fine.. It was very helpful for me…
Awesome… Just saved my day from a crash start. Thanks 🙂
Thaaaaaaaannnnnkkkkkkksssss!!!!! This bug really freaked me out!!! 😀
This is not a bug – it is a feature
Thank u
To resolve the problem you have to go to:
[1st way]
Tools -> Preferences -> Accelerators -> Load Preset -> Default -> OK
[2nd way]
1. Close TOAD.
2. Delete “plsqlkeys.bin” from your directory. (C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\User Files)
3. Reopen TOAD and see whether those keys now work.
4. If you can’t find out the file called plsqlkeys.bin from the directory, try to find it out from (C:\TOAD\temps)
Awesome ! That was of real Help 🙂
Thanks a lot man !!

When I started SQL Developer this morning, it threw some weird errors which I did not pay much attention for. I closed and re-opened the application and ran into this issue of ‘Backspace’ and ‘Enter’ keys not working.
I’ve had to use this three times in the past month. I’m really grateful for this solution, but does anyone know how to prevent this from happening again?
my ENTER key was not working. this fix resolved it
Tools -> Preferences -> Accelerators -> Load Preset -> Default -> OK

The file “plsqlkeys.bin” is getting corrupted. Do the following:
1. Close TOAD.
2. Delete “plsqlkeys.bin” from your \User Files directory.
(C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\User Files)
3. Reopen TOAD and see whether those keys now work.

Just for Mac users (v 3.0.02 at least), you should follow these steps (taken from sqldeveloper’s help):
“…you can restore the mappings to the defaults for your system by clicking Tools, then Preferences, then Shortcut Keys, then More Actions, then Load Keyboard Scheme, and then selecting Default.”

Thank you. I had this problem on Toad. Unfortunately I spent too much time before google it. =]
Thank you very much.
Whenever I got this error on SQL Developer I just google “SQL Developer arrow keys not working” and this site comes as first result so that resolve the issue right away. Because its impossible for me to memorize all these steps.
Thank you so much. After 5 years, this tip is still completely relevant!
PL/SQL developer 8 above descriped solutions are not applicable. I am on an envrironment were I can not erase files and there is not something like accelerators under Tools>preferecences.
