I finished the 2010 season with exactly 100 rides for a total of 4,545 miles. My annual goals are below, my season summary is below that, and my full 2010 ride map is at the bottom of the page.

Annual Cycling Goals for 2010

Num Goal Description Status
14,200 miles for the yearThe mileage goal is my primary annual goal. Last year my goal was 3,100 miles, which I achieved in early September, finishing the year with 4,135 miles. This year I don't expect to increase my mileage by a significant amount. I'd still like to get a lot of miles in, but with an emphasis on speed and climbing.Achieved
(on 10/8/10, total mileage through 12/29/10 is 4,902)
2Three centuriesWould like to at least match the three centuries I did last year.Achieved
9 centuries (101 mi. on 5/15, 114 mi. on 5/31, 111 mi. on 6/26, 101 mi. on 7/17, 116 mi. on 8/21, 125 mi. on 9/4, 129 mi. on 9/12, 102 mi. on 10/3, 113 mi. on 10/10)
3New Year's Day rideRide the annual NCC New Year's Day Temperature Ride.Achieved
Temperature at the start was 35°, but we ended up with 51 miles at 15.7 mph.
4Whiteface MountainRide the Whiteface Mountain hill climb on 6/19.Achieved
6/19/10, 1:05:31
5Equinox MountainRide the Equinox Mountain hill climb on 8/7.Not Achieved
Didn't have the right gearing to manage this hill, and ended up being out of town anyway.
6D2R2No excuses this year, I'm definitely doing the Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee on 8/21.Achieved
116.2 miles in 9:45:22. Definitely the toughest ride I've ever done.
7Great River RideComplete the Great River Ride on 10/10/10.Achieved
112 miles @ 16.4 mph
8Mount GreylockClimb Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts - ideally on a ride starting from home, but traveling to the start is OK too.Achieved
Two climbs - an epic 125-mile ride to Greylock on 9/4, followed by the NCC race on 9/11.
9Connecticut state lineCross the state line into Connecticut on a ride starting from home. Not Achieved
I made a valiant effort to hit this one, but it was not to be. A poorly-selected goal.
10150 miles on new roads outside AmherstI'm always trying to expand my selection of routes, so this goal provides an incentive to ride on roads I haven't ridden previously. Miles only count if they're on a ride starting from home (new miles are trivial on a trip to a new location).Achieved
Total of 306 miles of new roads - map is here
11Average speed over 17.0 mphI'm separating my speed goal into two separate categories this year, one for overall speed and one specifically targeted at "performance" rides. So far, so good
(through 12/29/10, average speed is 17.03 mph)
12Average speed on performance rides over 17.7 mphThis goal excludes casual and social rides, errands, winter ice rides, etc. It includes most solo rides in good conditions, and most group rides. Not Achieved
(through 12/29/10, average speed is 17.57 mph)
13Average gradient over 65 feet/mileTrying to get more hill work in this year. My new computer is a little more sensitive to elevation gain than my old one, so I've increased the goal from 2009, even though I didn't come close to it last year. Not Achieved
(through 12/29/10, average gradient is 57.1 ft/mi).
14TT/HC seriesFinish in the top ten in the NCC's Tuesday night combined time trial/hill climb series.Achieved
Finished #8 overall - full details here
15Early-season PRsSet personal records on Shutesbury and Pelham hills before June 1.Not Achieved
PR on Pelham on 4/30, just missed PR on Shutesbury on 4/6
16Century from homeRide a non-organized century as part of a regular solo or group ride (no travel-to-start).Achieved
100.7 miles at 17.8 mph on NCC Saturday Morning Ride on 5/15, plus centuries on 6/26, 7/17, 9/4, and 9/12.
17Williamsburg Climb - 27:00The NCC Thursday Night Ride climb, from Williamsburg center up Ashfield Road to Main Poland Road and on to Rt. 116. Best time in 2009 was 32:38.Not Achieved
I don't know what I was thinking with a goal of 27:00 on this climb. I did 27:49 in late May, but never got any closer than that.
18Pelham Hill - 23:20East Amherst Common up Pelham Road and Amherst Road to meet Rt. 202 in the center of Pelham. Best time in 2009 was 24:47.Not Achieved
This is one of my favorite climbs, and I felt pretty good about 23:20. But I ended up only doing three climbs this year, and my first effort, a PR of 23:51 in late April, was the best I could do all year.
19Shutesbury Hill - 17:30Shutesbury Road from East Leverett to the center of Shutesbury. Best time in 2009 was 18:40.Achieved
16:25.0 on 6/29
20Skinner - 13:50Skinner Mountain, from the park entrance at Rt. 47 to the apex of the sharp bend before the upper parking lot. Best time in 2009 was 14:43.Achieved
13:11.2 on 8/24/10
21Amity Street - 2:25Amity Street in Amherst, from University Drive to the top of the hill at South Prospect Street. Best time in 2009 was 2:44.Achieved
2:17.2 on 6/8/10
22South Pleasant Street - 0:55South Pleasant Street in Amherst, from the Amherst College gym to the top of the hill right before Rt. 9. Best time in 2009 was 0:58.Achieved
0:50.6 on 9/23/10. Crushed this one on a night that I was feeling very strong.
23Bookmill loop at 20 mphRt. 63 to Montague, past the Bookmill, and south on Meadow St and Falls Rd to Rt. 47, returning via the bike path and South Pleasant St. Best time in 2009 was 1:40:58 (19.6 mph). Not Achieved
Never even attempted this one. Ooops.

23 total goals, 15 achieved, 8 not achieved.

2010 Season Summary

This was a varied and action-packed year of cycling. I lost a bike, bought a bike, crashed once, did a bunch of racing, did a bunch of new rides, helped organize several rides, and managed to hit many (but not all) of my annual goals.

I went into the year looking for fairly stable mileage relative to 2009 (4,135 miles in 2009). I didn't really want to spend too much more time on the bike, but I wanted to make better use of the available time and try to improve my performance. I set my mileage goal at 4,200 miles, mainly just looking for any increase over 2009, but increased my goal for average speed substantially, from 16.46 mph in 2009 to a goal of 17.0 mph this year. This year, I also began differentiating between "performance" rides, which includes all training and high-effort group rides, and "recreational" rides, where fitness isn't the primary goal. With no baseline for guidance, I set the target for performance rides at 17.7 mph.

New Trek Madone 4.5

My plans took a hit in early March when my two-year-old road bike, locked up in front of Amherst Town Hall while I was in a meeting, was stolen. Fortunately, the folks at Laughing Dog in Amherst were able to hook me up with a replacement fairly quickly, and I was back on the road within a couple weeks, after doing the first NCC time trial of the season on my old ten-speed with knobby tires.

Within the first few weeks on the new bike, I had my first (and only) crash of the year, a two-rider pileup avoiding a turning car in Northampton. Fortunately both riders and both bikes emerged intact, and it was probably a useful experience overall, because it renewed my understanding of the importance of trying to predict driver behavior. My last crash, in 2008, which totalled my bike, also involved an oncoming car abruptly turning left in front of me, so clearly there's a pattern here...

Prior to this year, my only racing experience was in club races, but this year I did my first organized races, including hillclimbs up Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, NY, the Kancamagus Highway in Conway, NH, and Mt. Greylock in North Adams, MA; my first road race (the NCC Tour of the Hilltowns); and a white-knuckled training criterium in Montague. I did lousy in all of these, but the experiences were great, and I'm looking forward to more in 2011.

I did a bunch of long rides this year - I had a goal of three centuries, and I ended up doing nine, including six rides over 110 miles and two over 120. Three of the long rides stand out as particularly memorable:

Other highlights for the year included:

Ronde van Pelhaammeren

Grand Fundo

Margate, NJ

Arc du Carrousel

Also, it was only a short ride, but my single best ride of the year was probably my lap on the Champs-Élysées on a rented Velib' in December.

Off the bike, I became much more involved with the Northampton Cycling Club this year, joining the board of directors in January and taking over as club treasurer in the spring. I also helped organize several club events, including the Tour of the Hilltowns, the Greylock hillclimb, and the BikeFest Century, giving me a new appreciation for how much time and effort goes into organizing these events. Hats off to Peter Crowley, Mike McCusker, and Mike Hempstead, the primary organizers of the Hilltowns, Greylock, and BikeFest events, respectively.

Pelham Hill climb history

I've always had a strong interest in data tracking and performance analysis, which I pursued this year through a couple of web-based projects. I made substantial enhancements to the ride-logging and analysis tools on this site, with a goal of eventually being able to offer these as a service to other riders. I've been doing ride logging and climb analysis on my PC for several years, but this year I automated many of those processes, and integrated them into this site, so now my ride logs, ride maps and the status of my annual goals are all automatically updated based on the data from my bike computer. I also substantially enhanced my climb analysis tools, which automatically record and track the times for several dozen hillclimbs and other intervals I ride frequently. Just for fun, I also enhanced the rotating photo banner system that I built for other sites, and uploaded a bunch of my cycling photos for use here on this site.

Tuesday Night Results

In another project, I built an online results system for the NCC's Tuesday night time-trial and hillclimb race series. I've been tracking this with spreadsheets for a couple years, but this year I ported this system to the web to create a site that anyone can use to view race results, series standings, course records, and other historical information. The system now includes almost 1,000 individual results in over 80 races across the last four years. The Tuesday night series, organized by the NCC's David Goodwin, was highly successful this year, with a record number of 367 riders participating in 22 events. David introduced a new time trial course this year on River Road in Deerfield, and we saw a new course record on the long time trial course in Hatfield by Jeremy Durrin. The overall series was won for the fourth consecutive year by Todd Roberts, with Damien Callahan and Zak Page finishing on the podium.

New roads in 2010

I ended up finishing the year with 4,545 miles, which is a fair amount more than I had been hoping for. I barely missed both of my speed goals, finishing with 16.94 mph overall, and 17.52 mph on performance rides. For the overall speed, I ended up doing quite a bit more dirt-road riding than I've ever done in the past (Todd's two dirt-road rides, the Grand Fundo, and the D2R2), which slowed the speed down quite a bit, but still, a goal is a goal, and I fell a bit short. I did better on my goal for new mileage — I was shooting for 150 miles on roads I hadn't ridden before, and I ended up with over 300 (map on the right, click for more details). Long stretches of new roads on Jeremy's Grand Fundo, Todd's spring rides, and the trek out to Greylock helped a lot with this one. I ended up hitting 14 out of my 23 goals, which I think strikes a pretty good balance between setting realistic goals and including some that you have to stretch for.

I'm just getting started on my goals for 2011, but they'll probably look similar to this year - similar overall mileage, with faster times both overall and on individual intervals. I'll probably look at setting my interval goals about 3% to 5% faster than my best times from this year. I'm looking for a way to provide incentives for indoor and outdoor training during the winter months, and I'm definitely going to get rid of that damn Connecticut state line goal, which has been plaguing me for a couple of years now. I'd also like to do more racing next year, especially the hillclimbs in the BUMPS series — I'd like to get to the Equinox climb I missed this year, and maybe also Mount Washington.

Hope to see you out on the road in 2011!
