TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- It's a new solution to a help a financial issue felt by many families with children with disabilities.
Governor Jay Inslee has signed the ABLE Act, or the Achieving a Better Life Act.
It's meant to help people with disabilities save money through a tax-free savings account, one that's similar to a college savings account.
Families have the opportunity to invest up to $14,000 a year.
That money then could be taken out without being taxed, and be used towards housing, education, transportation, and other health expenses.
"It generally takes a lot of different kinds of therapies and interventions. Each child is unique, but generally requires quite a few things and many insurances don't necessary cover all of the therapies that a child may need," said Christine Lindgren, Director of the Responding to Autism Center.
Currently, families get penalized if they have over $2,000 in a savings account when they go to apply for insurance.
This law also fixes that.
