Australian poll shows growing support for legal abortion

October 05, 2009

A clear majority of Australians support abortion on demand, according to a new survey by the Australian Election Study. The poll found that 57% of respondents believed that women should be able to procure on abortion "readily when they want one," while another 33% believe the procedure should be legal "in special circumstances." Only 4% thought abortion should be illegal.

Although the survey found that voters in the Queensland state were even more solidly in favor of legal abortion than the nationwide norm, lawmakers conceded that an effort to repeal laws against abrtion would be "a vote loser"-- a political reality that suggests the poll results may not tell the whole story.
