Spokesman for Brazilian bishops' conference backs pro-abortion judicial nominee

October 01, 2009

A spokesman for the Brazilian bishops' conference gave his backing to the nomination of a Catholic who favors legal abortion to the country's highest court. José Antonio Dias Toffoli, who had been Brazil's solicitor general, was named by President Luiz Iancio "Lula" da Silva to a seat on supreme federal court. The nomination was defended by Bishop Dimas Lara Barbosa, the secretary general of the Brazilian episcopal conference. The nominee's brother, Father José Carlos Toffoli, is a former official of the bishops' conference. Bishop Barbosa said that "Father Toffoli himself attested to the competency and ethical behavior of his brother."
