Amazon.co.uk Review
As the impresario behind gravity-defying Russian blockbuster Night Watch, it's inevitable that Hollywood would come calling for Timur Bekmambetov. With a studio budget and an international cast, including two Oscar winners, Timur cooks up a Hong Kong-styled actioner bursting with fast cars and big guns. Our unlikely hero is mild-mannered Chicago accountant Wesley Gibson (Atonement's James McAvoy), whose father died when he was a tot. Wesley never learned to stand up for himself, and his girlfriend, boss, and best buddy all take advantage until the seductive Fox (Angelina Jolie) rescues him from a sharpshooter named Cross (The Pianists Thomas Kretschmann). After which, she whisks him away to a mansion on the edge of town to meet the other members of the Fraternity, where leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman) informs Wesley that Cross, a rogue agent, executed his father. Sloan believes Wesley has the goods to take him out, so he undergoes the Fraternity's brutal training regimen (Marc Warren and Common dish up some of the abuse). When he's ready, Sloan sends him out to fulfill his duty, but matters become complicated when Wesley finds out someone isn't telling the truth, leading our former milquetoast to exact an elaborate revenge. For those who've been following McAvoy's career to date, Wanted will surely come as a surprise. In adapting Mark Millar's comic series, Timur offers buckets of blood and a smidgen of depth, but fans of The Matrix and Mr. and Mrs. Smith will want to give this one a look. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2023With a stellar cast and mind-bending plot twists, "Wanted" on DVD is a thrilling ride from start to finish. The bonus features provide an insightful look behind the scenes, adding value to this well-crafted release.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 April 2009Great action flick for Saturday night with a few beers and a pizza. Don't expect the best writing or the best acting, this film does exactly what it sets out to do and that is non-stop action with a few twists and one liners...and of course Angelina Jolie is in it !!
It's worth watching just for the keyboard scene (this is something that every office worker must have felt like doing !!!)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 January 2010This is a great action film which I also find has an inspiring message.
The film is about Wesley, a guy whose life is pretty ordinary and pathetic: his boss bullies him, his best friend is sleeping with his girlfriend and he constantly has panic attacks.
He then gets taken under the wing of Fox (Angelina Jolie) who trains him to become an assassin in the 'fraternity', a group of assassins led by Morgan Freeman; so Wesley can avenge his father's death.
The action scenes are completely absurd but hugely entertaining (if most action films were realistic, they would be pretty boring, so I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing).
Through his assassin training, Wesley learns how to cope with the adrenaline that compounds his panic attacks and he takes control of his life again, gaining self-respect and confidence in the process.
The film is swarming with great quotes and one liners and I find the ending really inspiring. If you like films like 'Hitman' then you should enjoy 'Wanted.'
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 February 2009You have to set aside reality to watch this but who wants reality? This film was brilliant although you can see some ideas taken from other films but who cares? The ending is the best ending I have ever seen. Try not to focus on the unecessary deaths and train crash etc but all in all a great film and James McEvoy just gets better and better. He is very watchable and this should confirm him as one of the modern greats!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 November 2012This DVD has been bundled with a number of trailers for other films and unfortunately the structure of the playlist has been knobbled to try and force you to watch the trailers being unable to either fast forward to skip them. Alas this upset my DVD player to the point where I wasn't able to watch the DVD at all! (It's also really annoying, if I buy a DVD it's because I plan to watch it more than once, I'll probably watch the trailers once but don't make me watch them every time!).
I was able to get it to play on Windows Media player on my computer but it mangled the trailers (cutting off the end of each one) and was still flaky if I wanted to "rewind".
As far as the film itself is concerned it struggles at the start. After the opening scene the next 10 minutes are terribly boring as we get introduced to the main character and his dull, I almost gave up but struggled through until the action started. The film itself has a silly premise, silly superpowers for the main characters and is best watched late at night after your brain has started to go to sleep but if you want an action film without thinking too hard it's OK for the reduced price.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 June 2015Kept seeing this on television but always missing the first 5/10 minutes. Finally bought it and it is still as entertaining as the first viewing but now I know the whole story!. Brilliant cast. I am not normally given to watching violent films but this is a real must have it is fast moving and doesn't lose momentum.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2021I have watched this multiple times now, and probably will watch it again... Superb...
