Johannesburg - A man was arrested in Jeffreys Bay after he attempted to rape a mentally-challenged elderly woman, said Eastern Cape police on Monday.

Late on Saturday night, the man, 34, allegedly approached the 60-year-old woman as she was walking in Tulip street.

He apparently offered to walk with her and buy her cigarettes, said Lt-Col Priscilla Naidu.

“On the way to the woman's house, he grabbed her and dragged her into the bushes. The woman screamed and her screams attracted the attention of someone who phoned the police,” said Naidu.

Police arrived and arrested the man as he was about to sexually assault the woman.

A case of attempted rape has been opened and the man is expected to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. - Sapa
