Church urges Uruguay not to legalize embryonic stem-cell research

As the Uruguayan parliament debates the legalization of embryonic stem-cell research, the Archdiocese of Montevideo (the nation’s capital) is reminding legislators of the distinction between embryonic and adult stem-cell research and the rights of the human embryo. “There is no doubt that the human embryo is an individual of the human species, a human being,” the statement said. The bill, which would permit the destruction of human embryos, "violates the first of human rights: the right to life."
