The Gods Must Be Crazy

The NYT reports:

…On Friday, it was “1984” and another Orwell book, “Animal Farm,” that were dropped down the memory hole — by Amazon.com.

In a move that angered customers and generated waves of online pique, Amazon remotely deleted some digital editions of the books from the Kindle devices of readers who had bought them.

Amazon appears to have deleted other purchased e-books from Kindles recently. Customers commenting on Web forums reported the disappearance of digital editions of the Harry Potter books and the novels of Ayn Rand over similar issues.

“On the Internet, of course, there is no such thing as a memory hole,” opines the author of this piece in the last paragraph. Oh, don’t kid yourself, Brad Stone – of course there is.

    First, just lurking.

    Would you consider doing something about the white on black format? My laptop is too dim, my eyes too bad, can’t see my own typos.

    Earlier you had changed to white on gray. It was very readable but I do prefer the simple black on white. However, I have newspaper layout experience, and your column width in the previous versions was letter perfect. Newspaper columns are as they are for a reason.

    I tried a couple of templates, I don’t remember what they were. I like this one for being no-frills.

    Ah wait, yeah: there was one nice template, but it has a row at the bottom advertising itself. I didn’t like that.

    People buy a device that the seller tries to strip their rights with DRM or whatever– and then cry when the seller shows them they have no rights. Boo hoo. I have no pity for people who don’t complain about their freedom until after they get personally slighted. AND after they sold their own rights.
